Should I shave my head?

The short answer is: Yes, you should. But because you’re looking around the internet, I included my thoughts here about this very act.

Yes. Yes you should.

If you’re a woman who has never shaved her head, you will not know how much of your identity is woven into your hair. It will feel like the ultimate rebellion.

If you’re a metalhead bloke, with long hair, nothing will change about you if you shave your head. If you’re balding, shave it off: You’ll feel better about yourself, and everyone will still love you. (And metal is in your heart, not your hair.)

If you’re a woman with alopecia, shaving your head is the most liberating thing you can do. You won’t worry about bald patches any more, and good wigs are better than the best toppers (my fave is Jon Renau Smartlace – it’s what I’m wearing in the photo at the top).

But really, the only reason to shave your head is because you want to.

You likely found this blog post because you were looking for advice. Instead, I’d like to ask you whether you’re afraid of what other people will think? If you are, why do you allow others to have such power over you?

If you’re dead keen to do it, but are hesitating because it’s a huge step (it is! I know – I’ve done it!), here’s what to do.

Get a hair clipper from somewhere: Your parents, your husband, your wife, Big W, wherever.

Put on your favourite music, loud.

Grin madly at yourself in the mirror.

Shave.

Laugh.

It’s only hair. As a result, you can be lucky in two ways: The first is that you have a beautifully shaped head (that’s how I got lucky). Or, your hair will grow back (I’m not so lucky that way).

Also, if you’re like me and your body grows scalp hair badly, amazing things can happen.

Like when my husband and I were at a gig, and he spotted a bald chick. He pointed her out to me, saying:

‘I never in a million years would have thought a bald chick was sexy. Now I do. And that’s all because you are.’

He calls me Ventress these days. I am totally ok with that.

Asajj Ventress, my favourite bald female character.

To conclude:

Just shave it off.

Hopefully, you’ll giggle like crazy, enjoy every moment, and see life in a completely different way.

If you do, email me and tell me your experience!

Oh, but one more thing. Don’t do it because it’s a “charity thing”. You don’t need an excuse to shave your head.
