Better than fiction

Writers, pay attention to real life. It’s better than any school you’d attend.

I say this for a couple of reasons. The first is that basing characters on quirks of real people is the best way to make believable characters. But the second is because this week I’ve seen some things going on around me that you just couldn’t make up.

Even if I could blog about it, I wouldn’t. But the writer in me is absolutely screaming wow look at this, how awesome a book/mini-series/tv-show would it make! Because, honestly, real life is stranger than fiction.

That’s all I really wanted to say on the matter.

So if you are a writer, and you don’t pay attention to what goes on around you, start doing it. You’ll be amazed at how much more texture you’ll create for yourself.

  1. Same. And I agree 🙂 Though occasionally I find myself thinking, ‘I really ought to pay more conscious attention to the art of it, to hone it’. 🙂

  2. I couldn’t imagine not paying attention to real life. I think the best writers are the ones that naturally do that anyway. Good advice!
